
What types of pump fluids are there?
When selecting the right pump, it is essential to understand the type of fluid you are dealing with. The properties of the fluid determine which pump is most suitable for your application. Below, we discuss the most common categories of pump fluids and their characteristics.
Clean water
Clean water refers to water that contains few to no solid particles. Examples include groundwater, rainwater and purified wastewater. Although these liquids generally contain few contaminants, small amounts of dirt may still be present. Most pumps can handle this without any problems, provided that the pump’s free passage is sufficient. It is important to check whether the pump is suitable for the specific properties of the clean water in your application.
Dirty water
Dirty water contains a higher percentage of solid particles, such as mud, sand or organic material. This type of water is often found in floods, in construction or in domestic wastewater. Pumps that have to handle dirty water must have a larger free passage to prevent blockages. Depending on the quantity and size of the solid particles, it may be necessary to use a specially designed dirty water pump.
Sewage
Sewage is a complex liquid that contains not only water but also coarse solids, fibres, oils, fats and possibly chemical contaminants. Pumping sewage water places high demands on the pump, especially in terms of wear resistance and clogging resistance. Sewage water pumps are often equipped with cutting mechanisms or other devices to prevent clogging and increase reliability.
Slurries and abrasive liquids
Slurries are mixtures of liquids with a high content of solid particles, such as sand, gravel or minerals. These abrasive liquids cause increased wear on pump components. Therefore, slurry pumps are designed with wear-resistant materials and reinforced parts to extend service life and reduce maintenance costs.
Chemical liquids
Chemical liquids can be corrosive, toxic or reactive. Pumping such liquids requires pumps that are resistant to chemical attack. Materials such as stainless steel, plastic or special alloys are often used in chemical pumps to ensure safety and durability.
Viscous liquids
Viscous liquids, or liquids with high viscosity, such as oils, syrups or sludges, have a higher viscosity and require pumps that are specially designed to efficiently move these thicker liquids. Positive displacement pumps, such as gear pumps or worm pumps, are often suitable for these applications due to their ability to deliver a constant flow regardless of the viscosity of the fluid.
Gaseous substances and vapours
Although pumps are mainly used for liquids, there are also applications where gaseous substances or vapours need to be moved. Special pumps, such as vacuum pumps or compressors, are designed to handle these substances. It is important to select the right pump that is suitable for the specific properties of the gas or vapour.
